British scientists have begun the world’s first trials of a new antibody treatment that could prevent people exposed to the coronavirus from falling ill.

Researchers at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Trust are testing the therapy to see if it could provide emergency protection. The idea is that it might be given to people in households or a hospital ward where someone has caught Covid-19 and it is too late to offer those around the infected person a vaccine.

The antibody therapy could confer instant immunity, which would make it a vital tool in containing outbreaks. If trials prove successful, the antibody, known as AZD7442, could be used as a weapon against the virus from as early as March. (The Times)
