After trying, but failing to enlist in the army (because of his weak lungs) John Wilson enlisted in the RNWMP. (Royal Northwest Mounted Police) He was thirty years old when he was enlisted, and very proud about it. As the book says: "At the age of thirty, he had a new chance in life" (Simmie, pg. 21).
Cool facts about Mounties:
Charlie Dickens son served with the Royal Northwest Mounted Police from 1874-1876.
Mounties are tested for good eyesight, and they also have their hearing checked to make sure that they don't have too much hearing loss.
New Mounties must live and train at the RCMP Academy in Regina SK for 26 weeks.
A pristine and perfect uniform is extremely important. In fact a Canadian Mounties shoes need to be shined for a minimum of 25 hours before they have the perfect shine!
