The Dutch East India company is to this day, recognized as the most profitable company ever. They were granted Sovereignty and essentially became their own country on ships. They had legal power to do what they wanted, and were able to attack when they felt like it. This granted them a lot of power, and with access to the Eastern trade goods such as spices, they became very profitable in the Global Age.
