1 Jan 1899 Jahr - London Street Car strike
Beschreibung:
In London, Ontario 79 streetcar workers walked off the job and refused to work until their employer raised their wages. But the employer, in retaliation, locked all the employees out and hired non-unionized employees. This caused all Londoners in the summer of '89 to stand behind the unionized workers to support their goals. Throughout the summer citizens were boycotting the streetcar services but the boycotts were unsuccessful after riots broke out, but still, the employer refused the terms of the union. The workers were unsuccessful in forcing their employer to meet their demands and eventually Londoners began taking the streetcars again.
The London Street Car strikes sparked other strikes across the country. Streetcar workers in other Canadian cities fought for better working conditions, such as in Toronto in 1902, Winnipeg and Hamilton in 1906 and Montreal in 1903.
