Magna Graecia, or Megale Hellas in Greek, describes the areas of southern Italy and Sicily colonized by Greeks between the fifth and eighth centuries BCE. The term literally means "great Greece," or "big Greece" but had different meanings for different authors; some used it to refer solely to the Greek cities in coastal Italy, while others used it to refer to Sicily as well.
