This madrigal was composed during the 1590s, and its title translates to “Alone and pensive”. It was one of Marenzio’s most celebrated madrigals. The piece is a setting of a sonnet by Petrach, and his use of chromatics represents a new musical resource. Composers before his generation had never extended chromatic motion for more than a few semitones in one direction.
