48 And then shall the Lord set his foot upon this mount, and it shall cleave in twain, and the earth shall tremble, and reel to and fro, and the heavens also shall shake.
49 And the Lord shall utter his voice, and all the ends of the earth shall hear it; and the nations of the earth shall mourn, and they that have laughed shall see their folly.
50 And calamity shall cover the mocker, and the scorner shall be consumed; and they that have watched for iniquity shall be hewn down and cast into the fire.
51 And then shall the Jews look upon me and say: What are these wounds in thine hands and in thy feet?
52 Then shall they know that I am the Lord; for I will say unto them: These wounds are the wounds with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. I am he who was lifted up. I am Jesus that was crucified. I am the Son of God.
53 And then shall they weep because of their iniquities; then shall they lament because they persecuted their king.



Zechariah 14:4 ¶ And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

13:6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

Then will be fulfilled that saying, That the day shall come when the Lord shall have power over his Saints, and the Devil shall have power over his own dominion. He will give them up to the power of the Devil, and he will have power over them, and he will carry them about as chaff before a whirlwind. He will gather up millions upon millions of people into the valleys around about Jerusalem in order to destroy the Jews after they have gathered. How will the Devil do this? He will perform miracles to do it. The Bible says the kings of the earth and the great ones will be deceived by these false miracles. It says there shall be three unclean spirits that shall go forth working miracles, and they are spirits of devils. Where do they go? To the kings of the earth; and what will they do? Gather them up to battle unto the great day of God Almighty. Where? Into the valley of Armageddon. And where is that? On the east side of Jerusalem." Elder Orson Pratt

At the crisis of their fate, when the hostile troops of several nations are ravaging the city and all the horrors of war are overwhelming the people of Jerusalem, he will set his feet upon the Mount of Olives, which will cleave and part asunder at his touch. Attended by a host from heaven, he will overthrow and destroy the combined armies of the Gentiles, and appear to the worshipping Jews as the mighty Deliverer and Conquerer so long expected by their race; and while love, gratitude, awe, and admiration swell their bosoms, the Deliverer will show them the tokens of his crucifixion and disclose himself as Jesus of Nazareth, whom they had reviled and whom their fathers put to death. “His first appearance will be to the righteous Saints who have gathered to the New Jerusalem. In this place of refuge they will be safe from the wrath of the Lord, which will be poured out without measure on all nations. …

To these beleaguered sons of Judah, surrounded by hostile Gentile armies, who again threaten to overrun Jerusalem, the Savior—their Messiah—will appear and set His feet on the Mount of Olives, ‘and it shall cleave in twain, and the earth shall tremble, and reel to and fro, and the heavens also shall shake’ (D&C 45:48).

It will be breathtaking! The scope and grandeur, the vastness and magnificence, will exceed anything mortal eyes have ever seen or experienced.
In that day He will not come “wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger,”23 but He will appear “in the clouds of heaven, clothed with power and great glory; with all the holy angels.”24 We will hear “the voice of the archangel, and … the trump of God.”25 The sun and the moon will be transformed, and “stars [will] be hurled from their places.”26 You and I, or those who follow us, “the saints … from [every quarter] of the earth,”27 “shall be quickened and … caught up to meet him,”28  and those who have died in righteousness, they too will “be caught up to meet him in the midst … of heaven.”29
Then, a seemingly impossible experience: “All flesh,” the Lord says, “shall see me together.”30 How will it happen? We do not know. But I testify it will happen—exactly as prophesied. We will kneel in reverence, “and the Lord shall utter his voice, and all the ends of the earth shall hear it.”31 “It shall be … as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder.”32 “[Then] the Lord, … the Savior, shall stand in the midst of his people.”33

At the Mount of Olives
In D&C 45, the Lord declares that Zechariah 13 and 14 include prophecies connected with His coming to the Jews during the battle of Armageddon. D&C 45 and Revelation 16 also help define which prophecies regarding the last days will be fulfilled during this timeframe.

The battle of Armageddon, as described in the book of Revelation, will be incited by three evil spirits who will work some unspecified miracles among the leaders of the earth to convince them to fight against Israel (see Revelation 16:13–14, 16).

In referring to John’s meridian revelation, Elder Melvin J. Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles teaches:

“John saw a day when the righteous forces, both living and dead, shall be arrayed in a deadly conflict, at a place which he called Armageddon, against the forces of evil, both living and dead, to settle the question of supremacy in the earth. The forces of evil are at work preparing for that conflict. The evil one has his recruiting stations open everywhere, enlisting souls in the vain hope that he may yet gain the victory and obtain permanent right of rulership in the earth.”11
Zechariah 14 tells of this event—a time when the city of Jerusalem will be engaged in a battle against “all nations” that have been gathered against it. When half of the city has been taken captive, the Lord will descend along with “all the Saints” upon the Mount of Olives, which will be divided on an east-west axis, with one-half moving to the north and the other toward the south (Zechariah 14:4–5). In D&C 45:48, the Lord adds that an enormous earthquake will accompany this occurrence, an earthquake so powerful that it will seem like the heavens themselves shake. Indeed, Revelation 16:18 refers to this “great earthquake” and defines it as the worst that has occurred since mankind first inhabited the earth. In consequence of this quake, the cities of the nations will fall, islands will flee, mountains will disappear, and the city of Jerusalem will be divided into three parts (Zechariah 14:19–20).

Elder Parley P. Pratt provides a summary of some of the events connected with the battle of Armageddon:

"[T]he Jews gather home, and rebuild Jerusalem. The nations gather against them to battle. Their armies encompass the city, and have more or less power over it for three years and a half. A couple of . . . prophets, by their mighty miracles, keep them from utterly overcoming the Jews; until at length they are slain, and the city is left in a great measure to the mercy of their enemies for three days and a half. The two prophets rise from the dead and ascend up into heaven. The Messiah comes, convulses the earth, overthrows the army of the Gentiles, delivers the Jews, [and] cleanses Jerusalem."12
The valley formed by the division of the Mount of Olives when the Redeemer arrives will serve as an escape route for the surviving Israelites, and they will flee into it (see Zechariah 14:5). The Lord, in D&C 45, foretells what will happen next, an episode that will be one of the most profound moments in all of human history:

"And then shall the Jews look upon me and say: 'What are these wounds in thine hands and in thy feet?'
Then shall they know that I am the Lord; for I will say unto them: 'These wounds are the wounds with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. I am He who was lifted up. I am Jesus that was crucified. I am the Son of God.'
And then shall they weep because of their iniquities; then shall they lament because they persecuted their king" (D&C 45:51–53).
