The Missouri Compromise was a compromise made determining the spread of slavery to the west in the United States. It allowed for 1 slave state to be added so long as 1 free state was added to keep the balance in government representation. The Missouri Compromise was historically significant BECAUSE it marked the beginning of the conflict that would lead to the Civil War.
