STS-74, aboard Shuttle Atlantis, had the objective of docking with Mir, the Russian space station. Hadfield had the role of Mission Specialist, which required him to attach the Russian Docking Module to Mir using the Canadarm. In doing so, Hadfield became the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm in space.
