The mission had been delayed multiple times, and it was unclear if they were going to fly even on the morning of launch. 76 seconds after liftoff, the Shuttle disintegrated due to a leak in solid rocket boosters(SRB). The event, which was getting extra press due to the addition of a high school teacher to the crew, shocked Americans, and caused the program to go on hold for three years. The next mission would bring Hubble into orbit.
