Thirty-five former Hong Kong government officials, business, religious and academic figures, including the former President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Joseph Sung, signed a joint petition urging the Hong Kong government to take practical action to resolve social conflicts, not to push frontline police officers to the forefront of confrontational political views, and to set up an independent commission of inquiry. Over 2,000 signatures were received from various sectors.
