The English Reformation started with Henry VIII’s search for a male heir. When Pope Clement VII denied Henry’s request to divorce Catherine of Aragon so that he could remarry, Henry proclaimed in 1534 that he himself would be the only authority in matters associated with the English church. Henry shut down England’s monasteries to seize their wealth and worked to place the Bible into the possession of the people.
