Benjamin Franklin, a man that would become one of the Founding Fathers of the U.S., saw potential and was curious about a British man named Thomas Paine. Franklin helped Thomas Paine migrate to the Colonies, and in the colonies, Paine wrote one of the most significant articles known as “Common Sense”. This article was published in 1776 in Philadelphia, and more than 120,000 copies were sold. It was a famous document that caught the attention of several colonists.

In his article, Paine expressed two main points. One of them was getting independence from Britain, and the other was to form a democratic government for the American people.

After this article was published, Democracy was introduced to the colonists for the first time. They realized that the British government was far from being a democratic one. They knew that they would have to fight for their independence from Britain in order to create a democratic government of their own.
