4 Jan 1848 Jahr - Declaration of Sentiments

Beschreibung:

The Declaration of Sentiments is a document that was mainly written by Elizabeth Candy Stanton, a women's rights advocate. The document was read in the Seneca Falls Convention, which was the first woman's rights convention, held in New York. In the document, women assert that they are equal to men since they are American citizens. Moreover, it also states that women were also endowed with inalienable rights, such as liberty, life, and pursuit of happiness, therefore men do not have the right to take those rights away from them.

This document demonstrates that American Democracy at that time was not an actual democracy since not all American citizens were treated equally. The Declaration of Independence stated that only men, white men who owned land, had inalienable rights, and women and blacks did not. In those times, women were discriminated against because of their gender. Furthermore, the American Democracy at that time failed to uphold the pursuit of happiness principle since it did not give women any opportunities to achieve their goals. Women had to submit to the laws of a patriarchal society and to their husbands.
