Aaron Ogden filed a complaint in the Court of Chancery of New York asking the court to restrain Thomas Gibbons from operating on these waters. In 1824 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Gibbons. Congress had the right to regulate interstate commerce.
This decision not only provided the federal government with the ability to regulate interstate commerce, but it set a foundation for future disputes regarding the authority of the federal government over states' rights.
Aaron Ogden was a United States Senator and the fifth Governor of New Jersey.
Thomas Gibbons was a lawyer, politician, steamboat operator, and the plaintiff in Gibbons vs. Ogden.
