Enamored by rocket science as a youth, von Braun is one of the most key pioneers of space rocketry in history. His first major break was heading up a team of engineers for the V-2 program by Nazi Germany. Eventually, it became clear to von Braun that the Nazis would lose the war, and so decided beforehand to surrender to the Americans. After the war, he worked on developing rockets for the Americans. He designed several key rockets (such as the Redstone and Jupiter rockets) and launch vehicles (like the Juno II launch vehicles). Wernher von Braun became one of the primary advocates for space exploration in the mid-1900s. In 1960, President Eisenhower transferred von Braun's rocket development centre from his previous location, Redstone Arsenal, to the new National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He became the director of the Marshall Space Flight Centre, and developed more influential rockets, such as the Saturn V. His lifelong dream was accomplished on July 20, 1969 with the moon landings.
