The first ground engagement in the Gulf War was the Battle of Khafji. This was initiated by the Iraqis when they attacked the Saudi town of Khafji. However, the tables quickly turned and the coalition overwhelmed the Iraqi forces. After a victory there, the coalition crossed into Kuwait and began liberating Kuwait.
