On this day, the Irish Republic declared independence from the United Kingdom. Following a short war for independence, the Republic of Ireland was established. It was initially a British Commonwealth (much like Canada and Australia), but completely split from the UK following World War II. Ireland has struggled with civil war and social turmoil, but is today one of the most prosperous and free countries in the world.
