1 Jan 1861 Jahr - Benjamin F. Mudge

Beschreibung:

In 1861, Benjamin F. Mudge moved to Quindaro, becoming the coordinator of the Wyandotte County Agricultural Society. Mudge, a public school teacher, was also a conductor of the Underground Railroad. In 1862, he shared a personal account in a letter to his brother about helping an African American woman and her three children escape to freedom from their master. He refers to the slave family as "contraband." Mudge and other antislavery allies helped transport the family to safety. Later, in 1865, Mudge moved to Manhattan, Kansas. He became a state geologist and natural history professor at the newly established Kansas State Agricultural College.
