10 Apr 1887 Jahr - St. Margaret's
Beschreibung:
In 1887 St. Margaret’s Hospital was founded at 759 Vermont by Father Anthony Kuhls of St. Mary’s Parish. He was motivated to start the hospital after he learned that a man had been jailed delirious from typhoid fever where he died in 1886. The hospital opened with 4 physicians, 3 surgeons, the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis serving as nurses, and $35,000 most of which came from Father Kuhls. It was estimated that 3,000 people attended the opening of the hospital. In the first year, it was reported that 545 patients were treated for 70 cents per day for those who could afford to pay. In the second year, there were 1,532 patients. The hospital eventually merged with Providence and even later the name was dropped. The hospital was converted to a 111 apartment building in 2013.
