From October 15th to October 19th 1917, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck (German General commander of its forces of the German East African campaign and the British fought a mutually costly battle at Mahiwa. It triggered more casualties on the British side led to the promotion of Lettow-Vorbeck as Generalmajor.
