The UK's Covid-19 alert level is to be downgraded from four to three, but experts warn the pandemic is not over yet.

The Joint Biosecurity Centre has recommended the Covid-19 alert level - the five-tier system unveiled by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in May - should be reduced.

This means that the epidemic is in general circulation, and it is not over yet, but transmission is no longer "high or rising exponentially", the chief medical officers for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have said.

The Health Secretary Matt Hancock described the lowering of the alert level as a "big moment" for the UK, and that it showed "the Government's plan is working" in bringing down infection rates.

According to Government guidance, reduction to alert level three will mean the "gradual relaxing of restrictions and social distancing measures". (Telegraph)
