The byzantine empire was founded when the great roman empire started to decline, it was the eastern side of the roman empire and managed to survive the fall. The ruler was the Patriarch, the head of the Christian Orthodox church, and the empire was renounced for Constantinople, one of the ritchest cities of its time due to its location on the silk road.
