1 Jan 1995 Jahr - Impact of UN sanctions
Beschreibung:
-A blockade prevented imports of machinery, fertilisers, food and many medicines
-Iraq was initially unable to sell oil and therefore had very little income. However in 1996, the "oil for food" programme was set up where Iraq could sell oil to get food for its starving citizens.
-The lack of food and medication was causing thousands to die each month of starvation and disease
-It could also not import chemicals to purify water so up to 1/2 a million died of dysentery.
Saddam began filming disturbing scenes of the country's crisis and broadcasting it in other Arab countries. This began to turn these countries against the west and its sanctions.
