Over 700 000 troops went to the deserts of Saudi Arabia from 34 countries including the US and Britain as well as places such as other Arab nations and Muslim countries such as Egypt and Pakistan.
Most of the troops were American as the US (and most of the west) relied on Saudi oil. If Saddam was not challenged with force, he could gain control of Saudi oil fields, threatening the western way of life.
