WHY DID SOLIDARITY SUCCEED?
-It was strong in industries that were important to the government so the government felt that they had to let them continue.

-Solidarity had the support of the Catholic Church which was still strong in Poland.
-Over a million members of the communist party were part of solidarity.

An opinion poll in November 1981 showed that the Polish people had almost unanimous confidence in Solidarity and the Catholic church. Under 10% had confidence in the communist party. 11% of those in the poll were members of the communist party.
