The Embargo Act of 1807 was measure that prohibited American merchant ships from sailing to any foreign port, which Jefferson hoped would stop Britain from violating the rights of neutral nations rather than lose U.S. trade. However, the embargo only accomplished bringing economic hardship to the U.S. as Britain substituted supplies from South America for U.S. goods. The embargo resulted in a depression and was repealed by Jefferson in 1809 during the final days of his presidency.
