3 Dez 1824 Jahr - Election of 1824
Beschreibung:
The era ended in political bad feelings in 1824, the year of a bitterly contested and divisive presidential election. The old format of caucus to pick a nominee has broken down and now four nominees are running: John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, William Crawford and Andrew Jackson. Jackson had a good amount of the popular vote, but since the electoral votes were split within the states, Jackson did not have enough electoral votes to win. The House of Representatives now had to choose a President from the top three candidates. Henry Clay used his influence in the House to elect John Quincy Adams, who later picked Clay as his Secretary of State. Jackson and his supporters retaliated and called this a "corrupt bargain".
