The presidential election of 1816 involved a race between Democratic-Republic candidate James Monroe, and former president Madison's secretary of state, against Federalist Rufus King. The election became primarily influenced by the War of 1812 and foreign affairs facing the nation. It became a rather easy victory for the Democratic-Republican party, as James Monroe won the presidency. Due to the fact Federalists revolved their ideals against the war and centralization of the government. In the context of historic influence it was the last presidential election which Federalists ran a candidate in association to the party. Yet the inauguration of President Monroe marked the the emergence of a period named "The Era of Good Feelings" describing Monroe's two terms in office. Under the Monroe administration the nation experienced a spirit of nationalism, optimism, and goodwill postwar and post election.
