Napoleon stepped down from his high throne in 1814 and was exiled to a Mediterranean island called Elba. When he escaped and gathered his army to go to France, he faced the powers at Waterloo, where he surrendered. This is important because Napoleon was a great military leader who secured many victories for France. Some consider this event to be the official end of the French Revolution, sixteen years after the Directory was overthrown by Napoleon. He ended up betraying the Revolution, since he made France return to an absolute monarchy.
