Napoleon Bonaparte overthrew the Directory in a coup d´état called the Coup of 18th Brumaire. The three consuls that replaced the five directors wanted to replace the government with the French Consulate, with Napoleon as ¨First Consul.¨ This was important because it proved that ordinary people can rise to power without having to be born in a rich, royal family.
