The New York Times published the “Pentagon Papers” the secret Defense Department study for US involvement in Vietnam. Leaked by Daniel Ellsberg, the report said that in the past the US government had lied to the public about the Vietnam War. The papers said that the real reason the US pouring troops into Vietnam was to “avoid a humiliating defeat” not to keep South Vietnam free from communism.
