Since 1949, relations with China have been cut off. The US had only recognized the island of Taiwan. Nixon wanted to establish relations with China to counterbalance the Soviets. The problem was that they were communists. Nixon tells the citizens that the Chinese are extremely kind. In 1972, Nixon became the first president to visit communist China and the two nation’s relationships were solidified. This relationship woul later work in Nixons plan for a multi polar world.
