The Kingpriest tried to eradicate all evil from the world, going to extreme and going on the greatest witch hunt in history. He became paranoid and saw evil everywhere, even amongst the clerics and the white robe mages... then he turned against the gods, and proclaimed himself the god of the world. During his prayer ritual to ascend to godhood, the gods punished him by hurling a meteorite on the kingpriest, then walking away from the world for years to come.
