AESOP was a breakthrough in robotic surgery when introduced in 1994, as it was the first laparoscopic camera holder to be approved by the FDA. NASA initially funded the company, Computer Motion, that had produced AESOP, for its goal to create a robotic arm that can be used in space, but ended up becoming a camera used in laparascopic procedures.
