This was a tactic performed by the Nationalists against the Republican supporters in order to make it known that they were in charge and that the reform of the Second Republic would never happen. The army generals had believed that it was necessary for the ‘White Terror’ to occur because there was a large population of urban and rural working classes. Franco the leader of the Nationalist party had purposely delayed his advancement in order to make sure he was able to eliminate anyone who opposes the traditional Spanish values and the elites interests. Therefore explaining why Franco’s Africanistas was occuring at the same time as he took over Madrid. Franco’s Africanistas, ‘Column of Death’, is where people were murdered and executed if they had believed that you supported the Republicans. During the brutal murders many people didn’t know of Franco’s true actions as the Church had never criticized Franco’s action and said they were unaware. However the Church was actually proven to have participated in the murder of Republican supporters and were able to censor and block the information from spreading to the public.
