He was murdered in retaliation for the murder of a Popular Front supporter. His death was a reason for the army to start a revolt. He was a prominent right-wing leader and in 1935 he tried to gain control of the Falange Party (semi-fascist party). After 1936 elections (popular front won), he was one of the leaders to the opposition of the reforms. He was also very close to Rivera and even supported his coup in 1923 and 1925. He was his finance minister. His assassination by the bodyguards of Socialist party leader Indalecio Prieto was an immediate prelude to the triggering of the military coup plotted since February 1936, the partial failure of which marked the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
