There was a military coup on August 10th, 1932 that attempted to take power from Azana’s government led by General Jose Sanjurjo. The goal of the coup was to rid Spain of the current politicians, not the Republic itself. It was a failure on the General’s part, and only increased the malice of military officers towards left-wing politicians. Much to the conspirator’s dislike, the coup actually helped Azana gain support, so much so that he was able to convince the Cortes to pass agrarian and regional reforms. The plot was poorly planned and executed, which led to it falling apart. It had been created by a large group of active and retired military members because they were dissatisfied with the way that Azana was running the country. Since the Republic was formed, military members (active and retired) had been continually frustrated with policies regarding the military, because Spain was becoming more anti-military.
