The election of 1931 was won by the republicans and socialists. SInce 1923 spain had a dictatorship and after the end of Primo de Rivera dictatorship and the failure of his successor to create another dictatorship, in 1931 the new cabinet decided to hold elections for the first time in 9 years. Even though the elections were just local elections it was seen as a vote on the Spanish Monarchy
