High density housing is coming to rural Auckland.

More than 1300 new homes have been fast tracked for the Auranga development in Drury West - including high density properties.

The announcement on Wednesday follows approval of a private plan change that rezones 83ha of future urban zoned land for primarily residential use.

Auckland Council's decision brings land subdivision at Auranga forward by at least four years, in an effort to contribute to the supply of an additional 13,000 homes per year - the target of the Auckland Plan.
