The Mattachine Society was a gay rights organization founded by Harry Hay. Its stated goals were to combat the negative social perception of gay men and to aid those victimized by discriminatory practices, such as those championed by Senator McCarthy. The Mattachine fell out of favor in the wake of the Stonewall Riots due to the perception that they were too traditional and too non-confrontational by other gay rights groups.
