In the winter of 1861-1862, George Washington, a slave owned by Jesse Miller whose farm was located near the contemporary K.C.I. airport in Platte County, Missouri, broke free with the aid of a fellow slave and took the well-established escape route through Parkville to
Quindaro where unnamed conductors assisted his movement to Leavenworth.
