1 Jan 1898 Jahr - Douglass Hospital

Beschreibung:

In 1898, Douglass Hospital and Training School for Nurses was established, located at 312 Washington Street. At this time, Black doctors were not allowed to treat patients in any of the hospitals in Kansas City, Kansas, nor were they allowed to perform surgery in the average home. In 1897, a meeting was held between Dr. S.H. Thompson, I.F Bradley, Dr. H.S. Howell, Dr. T.C. Unthank, Rev. George McNeal, and Rev. Calvin Douglass, to discuss the need for a hospital and a place to train nurses. The hospital opened at the Washington Avenue location, moved to Springfield Street and Quindaro Blvd., and then to 3700 North 27th Street (Quindaro). The hospital was named in honor of Rev. Calvin Douglass an African Methodist Episcopal Minister and not Fredrick Douglass, as is commonly thought (Plaindealer 1899, Colored Citizen 1898, American Citizen 1909) (Robinson)

In the 1900 edition of the University of Kansas Law School Senior Class Magazine, I.F. Bradley wrote: "The Douglass Hospital and Training School for Nurses, of which I was one of the founders and am still president of the board of directors…is the only thing of the kind in the United States, organized, managed, and maintained by Negroes alone and I will add that it is run on the charitable plan and the doors are opened to the world, regardless of race, color, or condition." (Robinson)

Douglass Hospital also included a Training School for Nurses. This was the only Hospital west of Chicago where African American females were permitted to take a course of training. The Training School gave a two-year course to women who desired to become professional nurses. Those who wanted to enter the school "had to make application to the head nurse; they must be a high school graduate, be over nineteen years of age and in good physical condition; they must send recommendation from two or more well- known persons as to their moral fitness."
