7 Sept 1953 Jahr - Department of Māori Affairs housing development Southern Maori District

Beschreibung:

Mr TIRIKATENE (Southern Maori District) noted from the Department's report that last year a total of 511 Maori houses had been built—387 under the Maori Housing Act 1935, five under the Maori Housing Amendment Act 1938, sixty-four under rehabilitation services, forty-eight in connection with land develop- ment, and seven others. The cost of sections and of building materials had in- creased to such an extent that whereas formerly a reasonable home for a family f three or four could be built for £1,500, now it was almost impossible, with a loan limit of £2,000, for the average Maori to find the necessary money. Many Maoris lived in remote areas with difficult access, and greater consideration should be given to them. Generally speaking, the cost of homes today was far too great in relation to the earnings of the Maori people. The statement was recently made that thirty- eight houses for Maoris were constructed in the South Island last year. If that was so, then he could not imagine where they were.
