FBI announced they had a person of interest- Steven J. Hatfill, because of his prior work at USAMRIID, and his background (ex-military, spent most of his life in Africa working on epidemics such as ebola, completed a medical degree, continuously went back to Africa during times of civil war), scientific capabilities (became a virologist and returned to the US to work on Ebola and other viruses, until he got a job at USAMRIID), and activities around the time of the anthrax letters. He had unrestricted access to the Ames Strain. He has an unpublished a book about bioterrorism in DC, and he had fulfilled multiple prescriptions for the antibiotic Cipro in 2001, when he had also been taking the drug in September, where at the time 2 of the anthrax letters had been postmarked.
