18 Sept 1931 Jahr - Mukden Incident

Beschreibung:

On September 18, 1931, an explosion destroyed a section of railway track near the city of Mukden. The Japanese, who owned the railway, blamed Chinese nationalists for the incident and used the opportunity to retaliate and invade Manchuria

Importance to Japanese expansion: Japan invaded Manchuria to protect Japanese economic interests. They were taking advantage of China at a time when it was divided by civil war as well and pounced on the opportunity to gain more land and therefore power. Japan refused to accept the Lytton Commission’s suggestions and left the League a month later, in 1933.

International Response: In response, U.S. Secretary of State Henry Stimson issued what would become known as the Stimson Doctrine, stating that the United States would not recognize any agreements between the Japanese and Chinese that limited free commercial intercourse in the region. Following this incident, China appealed to the League of Nations because they had hoped to get recognition for the “Collective Security” of the League, but they did not take action.
