20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr., who had driven from Ohio to attend the Unite the Right rally, deliberately drove into a crowd of people who had been peacefully protesting the rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing one and injuring 28.

Fields was convicted in a state court of hit and run, the first-degree murder of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, and eight counts of malicious wounding, and sentenced to life in prison with an additional 419 years in July 2019.

In an August 15 statement, widely condemned as downplaying white supremacists, President Trump said:

I think there is blame on both sides. You look at, you look at both sides. I think there’s blame on both sides, and I have no doubt about it...you also had people that were very fine people on both sides.
