originally described by certain white Americans as a race riot caused by blacks, over time, with more facts publicized, the event has come to be seen as a coup d'état, the violent overthrow of a duly elected government, by a group of whites. Multiple causes — social, political, and economic — brought it about. It is claimed to be the only such incident in American history, though late Reconstruction Era violence determined or helped to determine many other government elections in the south in favor of the Democrats.

The coup occurred after the state's white Southern Democratic Party conspired and led a mob of 2,000 white men to overthrow the legitimately-elected local Fusionist government. They expelled opposition black and white political leaders from the city, destroyed the property and businesses of black citizens built up since the Civil War, including the only black newspaper in the city, and killed an estimated 60 to more than 300 people.

More than 2,000 blacks left Wilmington permanently, forced to abandon their businesses and properties. This greatly reduced the city's professional and artisan class and changed the formerly black-majority city into one with a white majority. While some whites were wounded, no whites were reported killed.

While the loss of blacks and the refusal to hire black workers benefitted the white labor movement in terms of job availability, white men were disappointed with the types of jobs that were available, as they were "nigger jobs" that paid "nigger wages."
