Description: The Napoleonic code was the modern civil code that became the basis for most civil codes in Europe and Latin America after it. Before the code, laws in France were not unified. Every province had its own set of laws. After the revolution, the need for a unified code of law was even greater. Systems that had somewhat managed law enforcement were no longer around. As a result, Napoleon established the Napoleonic code. It was based on three ideals of the revolution: Laws should be reasonable, all men should be equal under the law, and people should have the right to choose their professions and religions.
Why it matters: For the first time in a while, it presented France as a unified front in terms of the law. It was also the civil code that influenced most civil codes in Europe and Latin America after it. Furthermore, it established Napoleon's power and political ability.
