Diplomatic Standoff between the United States and Iran. Iranian forces invade the US embassy in Tehran, Iran, and take the people inside hostage. The standoff lasts for 444 days before diplomatic negotiations failed, and president Carter authorized a military extraction. The extraction was largely a failure. This hurt Carter's ratings, and may have contributed to him not being reelected.
